Rules and General Information


Do not camp within approximately 15 metres of another tent.  Camping pitches in the sand dune areas are as where there are convenient pitches that afford some privacy.

Do not cut down trees. Shell Island is an area of special scientific interest. Anyone reported or caught damaging trees will be prosecuted and asked to leave.

Do not make open fires. All fires must be raised off the ground in a fire bin. Please ensure all fire/ash is dampened before disposal into skips. Camp fires are ok on the main beach as long as you clean up afterwards.

Barbecues are allowed, but they must be raised off the ground not to damage the grass. Please dispose of barbecues correctly and make sure they are fully extinguished.  

Do not leave rubbish around your site and always take rubbish to the skips. Please do not leave bin bags etc outside as the birds will attack them. Report any untidy sites to Reception with relevant car numbers. Please make sure you tidy your site before leaving, and place all rubbish in to the skips.

Please keep all dogs on leads/teathered at all times and clean up after them. There are a few fields where dogs aren’t allowed, please look out for the relevant signs for these areas. Shell Island is one of the few beaches that dogs are allowed on, so please clean up after them and use the doggy bins provided. On the main area of the beach dogs must be kept on leads, however if they fancy a run off their lead, there is an area available to them past the last bin on the main beach or in the dog exercise field by the football field. Free doggy bags are available at the Toll gate. Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, all dogs must wear a collar and ID tag when out in public, which must detail their owner's name and address whilst on site. .

Due to a change in Government legislation, the XL Bully breed is now on the dangerous dog list, this mean as under our terms and conditions we do not accept any dogs which are on the dangerous dog list. This means, if your dog is an XL Bully you will not be able to bring them on holiday with you even if licensed. This rule applies to XL Bully assistance dogs.  

Noise/Radios. No generators at all allowed on site. All noise/radios must be off by 10pm. Before this time all noise/radios must be kept at a reasonable level so it does not disturb any other campers.

No fireworks /Chinese lanterns/Drones. Shell Island does not allow fireworks or Chinese lanterns to be used onsite. We also do not allow Drone flying from the site. Anybody caught doing so will be asked to leave.

Road Rules. Normally road rules apply on Shell Island. Any drink drivers will be prosecuted by the police. Please adhere to all speed limits on site anybody caught not adhering to them will be asked to leave. No boot riders etc. No driving on the sand dunes or the beach.

Cyclists. We advise all cyclists to wear helmets whilst cycling on the Island.

We do not accept caravans,Tear drop trailers/mini caravans, Motorised scooters, Jet skis, quads, Go peds, Mini Motorbikes. Road legal bikes are allowed as transport (subject to conditions), (off road /trial bikes are not permitted).

Power Kites.  Power kites are permitted but they must show valid insurance. Power kites may only be used 400yds/mtrs south of the main beach car park. Buggy kites by prior arrangement only.

Shell Island is a families and couples campsite only and do not accept any groups.

Breaking any of Shell Island rules will result in your party being asked to leave and may result in a ban.

The management accept no responsibility for any damage caused due to weather.

It is up to individuals to assess the weather conditions before commencing with their holiday.

Weather forecast is available on the TV in reception and is updated regularly.

Daily newspapers, Bread, Milk, Fresh BBQ meat, Frozen Food, Canned goods, Biscuits, Sausages, Bacon, Eggs, Pies, pastries, Canned and large bottled soft drinks, Confectionary, Snacks, Mobile phone charging and much more.

Camping Shop- Opening hours- Main season 8am – 8pm, Low season 9.00am – 5.00pm Please check shops for relevant opening times and they may change. 

Ice pack hire(no personal ice packs accepted), Camping accessories from pegs to porta potties, Fishing tackle, Bait, Calor and Camping Gaz, Fire Bins, Barbecues, Barbecue fuel, Logs, Clothes, Postage stamps, Leisure battery and phone charging.

Gift Shop- Opening hours- Main season 8am – 8pm, Low season 9.00am – 5.00pm. Please check shops for relevant opening times and they may change. 

Beach toys, Scoop ice cream, Cut n’ serve fudge, Souvenirs, Shells, Badges, Toys etc

Snack Bar- Opening hours- Main season 8.30am-8.30pm, Low season 9.30pm- 3.00pm, 5.00pm-7.00pm. See snack bar for serving times.

 A wide menu available for consumption on the premises or available as take outs.

Tavern Bar- Opening hours- Main season 11.00am – 11.00pm, Low season 12.00pm-11.00pm Sunday 12.00pm-10.30pm

 Selling beers wines and spirits for on and off the premises. Beers and wines at competitive prices.

Laundrette- Opening hours- 24hrs

 Situated next to the supermarket. Washing powder etc available from the supermarket.

Showers- Opening times- 7.00am- 1.00pm (closed for cleaning) reopen 3.00pm-10.00pm

Disabled shower accessible with a radar key.

Cash Back- Available on debit cards, during reception hours, Pin must be used and its a £1 charge.

Tides- We do have a tidal causeway so please be aware of the safe times to cross before travelling

on and off site. Tidal times are printed around the main buildings and are also available on our website.

Mail-There is a post box available next to the supermarket. Collection for mail is 12.00pm. Any mail arriving is available from the supermarket from 3.00pm.

During quiet periods shops and snack bar times may change.

 Camping Conditions and General Information

Arrivals and Departures- Campers on Shell Island must book in at reception on arrival before pitching. You may arrive anytime between 8.00am and 8.00pm (9.00pm on Fridays) no admittance will be given outside of these times. Sites must be vacated by 3.00pm on the day of departure, When we are full we can not guarantee that you will be able to extend your stay so it is advised to make sure you book nights that you want at the time of booking. 

Please be advised that if you turn up after 9pm, you will not be permitted access to camp on the main site and will be put in the Exit field for the night. This also includes late arrivals after the tides in the evening, when the tide goes down after 9pm.

Fees- All fees are payable on arrival or online, in advance with no refunds. Long stays must be paid for 2 weeks at a time in advance. Cards accepted Visa- MasterCard- Switch- Delta-Solo. Some cards may incur fees for min spends. 

Security- Whilst Shell Island does have onsite security patrolling the island, we cannot guarantee 100% against the loss of personal possessions. We advise that all personal belongings should be locked away. Please report anyone acting suspiciously to the Toll gate or Reception.

Emergencies- First aid boxes are available at Reception and the Toll gate. We have a first aid room available in Reception for any assistance that can be given to be given, please remember we are only first aid trained and can only advise on certain situations. All campers are advised to carry their own first aid box. If you require an emergency service, please inform either reception or gate house staff on duty so that we can direct the emergency services to you, and so arrangements can be made for the service to come on to site via the airfield if the tide is up. 24hr phone is available at the entrance to the snack bar. Nearest main Accident and emergency is Bangor (1 hr away) or there is a minor unit (until 8pm) in Tremadog (25 mins away). Details of local Doctors and Dentists are available in Reception. Fire boxes are provided within 100 metres of all sites. In the event of a fire breaking out at your tent- Raise the alarm, and get everyone out FIRST, then fetch a fire extinguisher from a fire box, and only use it if it is safe to do so.  

Toilets and Showers-There is a main toilet block in the centre of the Island. We also have 6 toilet blocks available onsite which 5 have accessable toilets. During busy times we do suggest using the main toilet block. We also have a shower block available in the centre of the island, please check opening times. During busy times we have a green cabin available next to the shower block with additional showers. We have babies baths available in both the main men’s and woman’s toilets and also in the ladies showers. If there are any problems with any toilets or showers please report to reception ASAP. We also have a disabled toilet and shower available which is accessible by a radar key.  Baby changing units are available in most the main and building toilets.

Elsan/chemical toilets and Grey waste- We have an chemical toilet waste disposal point available at the side of the main toilet block and a drive over Grey waste disposal area in front of this.  Please do not empty chemical toilets in any of the normal toilet blocks.

Water Supply- Taps are conveniently placed around the site, they are attached to white posts normally next to gate ways. Water taps are for filling water containers only. Please do not wash dishes under the taps. During busy times water pressure can drop, so it is advised to fill containers early morning or in the evening. If all pressure drops in a tap near you there is always water available on the fence at the side of the main toilet block.

Washing Dishes- There is a dish washing area available at the back of the shower block. Please use a washing up bowl and tidy the area after use.

Speed Limit- A speed limit of 20 mph covers the whole Island but is reduced around the main buildings to 10mph

Beach and Sand dunes- On the main beach there are bins and life rings provided. In an emergency please dial 999 for coastguard and then if possible inform reception/gate house 01341 241453. We kindly ask that all rubbish is disposed of in the bins provided. If you find glass etc in the sand dunes please report to reception ASAP. TAKE NOTHING BUT MEMORIES AND LEAVE NOTHING BUT FOOTPRINTS.

Boat Owners- Boats and their equipment are at OWNERS RISK, No claim will be entertained by the management for personal injury, loss of life, theft, damage or total loss of boat. All boats on trailers must have valid insurance. Trailers to be parked at owner’s camp. Speed limits 5mph inside outer buoy.

During school holidays and weekends it is advisable to book online to guarantee a pitch. When we are full we can not guarantee that you will be able to extend your stay so it is advised to make sure you book nights that you want at the time of booking. 

From today (28/06/2021) onwards if you arrive late for a booking or bring less people that are booked, we will not issue any credit notes for this unless we are told minimum 48 hours prior to your arrival, this is due to us loosing spaces that could have been used by other people.
